A few weeks ago, we already shared an article about choosing appropriate health insurance and what to look out for. Now that we're in the last month of the year, it's a good time to come back to this and remember when to change your health insurance. Even if the 2026 premiums remain largely the same, it remains wise to review your current policy again for the terms and conditions. This way, you can be sure that you are properly insured next year.
The health insurance basis reimburses the most important care, such as general practitioners, hospital care and medicines. Each insurer offers roughly the same basic coverage, but the conditions may differ. For example, freedom of choice for healthcare providers or the amount of the deductible. That is why it is smart to check annually whether your health insurance base still matches your current situation. Do you expect to need different care in 2026 or less? That can affect your choice.
Many people mainly think of the basic policy, but it is precisely the conditions of the supplementary health insurance that often change. Think of reimbursements for physiotherapy and glasses, for example. Ask yourself: do you still use this care? Do you perhaps need more care in the coming year? By taking a critical look at your supplementary health insurance, you avoid paying too much or being underinsured. Because conditions change annually, it is wise to reassess each year whether your supplementary health insurance still suits your needs and situation. In addition, pay attention to whether your treatments are not decreasing, while your monthly amount remains the same.
Do you want to switch? Then you need to know when to change your health insurance. The deadline is December 31, 2025, until then, you can choose a new insurance policy. You must cancel before December 31, but you can usually take out a new policy until the end of January of the following year. Take a good look at the data for each insurer.
